Ijen Blue Flame

Observe the famous ‘blue flames’ of Ijen Crater during a guided trek of Mount Ijen. Departing early evening from Bali by ferry, this overnight excursion brings you to East Java late at night to start your predawn hike to its 2769 summit.

Witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon in the darkness and later be treated to superb views inside Ijen Crater.

Bring your camera to capture the sight and meet local sulfur miners who have toiled on the mountain for ages.

HIGHLIGHT

• Start your overnight tour to Mount Ijen with pick-up in early evening around 19.00 from Kuta, Sanur, Denpasar, Jimbaran or Nusa Dua. Departing from your accommodation, you are transferred to Gilimanuk ferry harbor in West Bali, crossing the sea by ferry and arriving in East Java around midnight.
• You are driven directly to the hiking base of your guided mountain trek, where you will receive a safety briefing and equipment including flashlight and gas mask. The approximate 1 mile (3 kms) route to the 2769 summit takes roughly 2 hours over a combination of uphill and flat terrain.
• En-route, interact with the sulfur miners who carry blocks of yellow sulfur weighing 132 – 1176 pounds (60 – 80 kgs) via bamboo pole baskets across their shoulders. Later, witness their mining activity by traditional methods using iron rods without safety equipment.
• On arrival at the summit before dawn, glimpse the natural phenomenon of Mount Ijen’s blue flame (depending on weather conditions). Stop on the mountaintop for a closer look and some fantastic photos of Ijen Crater, Java’s largest acid lake, before you are guided back dawn.
• After the descent, have breakfast at local warung. Then you are transferred to Banyuwangi Harbor for the late morning ferry back to Bali. Your journey ends with lunch at a local restaurant before drop-off at your hotel in the afternoon.
